Close Brothers and Cheltenham Festival 2024

Tuesday 12 to Friday 15 March 2024

Lossiemouth wins the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle

Day 1 - Champion Day, saw our named race, the Close Brothers Mares' Hurdle take place at 4.10 pm.  The favourite Lossiemouth, ridden by Paul Townend and trained by Willie Mullins, surged to victory, with last year's winning jockey Rachael Blackmore coming second on Telmesomethinggirl.

The Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle also saw Love Envoi run her final race, as trainer Harry Fry announced her retirement. Love Envoi previously finished second behind Honeysuckle in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle last year and we wish her all the best in her retirement.

Honeysuckle signs off as one of the all-time greats

It was a fairytale ending in 2023 with Honeysuckle, ridden by Rachael Blackmore and trained by Henry de Bromhead, signing off her career with a fourth Cheltenham Festival victory in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle, a race she previously won in 2020.

Honeysuckle was also awarded the Judges Choice Award at The McCoys, The Jockey Club jump racing awards ceremony back in September 2023, and it was a fitting tribute for Close Brothers to be sponsor of the award.

Watch the video to take a look back at Honeysuckle's success over the years, and of course her wins in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle race.

Our Cheltenham Festival race history

2016

Close Brothers first year at the Cheltenham Festival, sponsoring the 5.30 pm Novices Handicap Chase on the opening day of the festival. Won by Ballyalton (IRE).

2017

The Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase this year was a thrilling race, but in the end Tully East came through and won by a cosy length-and-a-quarter.

2018

Bottom weight Mister Whitaker came out best in the closest finish on day one of the Festival for trainer Mick Channon and jockey Brian Hughes.

2019

Rachael Blackmore landed her first Cheltenham Festival winner with a superb ride on A Plus Tard to land the 2019 Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase. A Plus Tard’s win was the first of the festival by a favourite, coming just half an hour after the short-priced Benie Des Dieux had fallen when clear at the final fence in the Mares’ Hurdle.

2020

A switch of race this year saw Close Brothers now sponsoring the Mares Hurdle on day 1 of the Festival. Benie Des Dieux was a strong favourite to take the race but Rachael Blackmore pinched the race with a decisive move around the home bend on board Honeysuckle.

2021

Due to Covid-19 this year’s Cheltenham Festival took place behind closed doors, with no crowds in attendance. In a thrilling finish, Black Tears ridden by Jack Kennedy and trained by Denise Foster took the race to deny the Willie Mullins trained favourite Concertista.

2022

Marie’s Rock, who was well in command towards the finish, wins the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle. Ridden by Nico de Boinville and trained by Nicky Henderson.

2023

Honeysuckle signed off her career with a fourth Festival victory in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle, a race she previously won in 2020. Ridden by Rachael Blackmore and trained by Henry de Bromhead.

2024

Lossiemouth surged to victory in the Close Brothers Mares’ Hurdle. Ridden by Paul Townend and trained by Willie Mullins.
