Simi Uddin, Treasury Operational Control Analyst at Close Brothers
Name: Simi Uddin
Internship year: 2021
Internship department: Treasury Operational Control
Why did you apply for an internship with Close Brothers?
I applied to the Close Brothers Internship as I was interested in finding more about what careers were available to me in a bank, with a STEM based degree. I was particularly drawn to the Close Brothers internship due to the wide range of opportunities and chose to work in Treasury to gain a stronger understanding of how the business operates and funds itself.
What did you get out of your Close Brothers internship?
As an intern I was able to work alongside everyone in Treasury and also work with individuals from our central business. It was a great opportunity to learn something completely new and apply my learning and understanding to work and support others in the business. I was also really interested in the work the networks and committees at CB did and joined the Treasury engagement committee where I helped organise and deliver a lunch and learn session. After the internship I felt I had a really strong understanding of Treasury and the sort of business/role I wanted to work in once I graduated.
Why would you encourage others to apply?
From the start of the internship you are given responsibilities and are provided with the knowledge and support you need to manage your own work and time. It’s a working environment where you can confidently express an interest in different parts of the business and have the opportunity to work with all the teams. You always have your peers to reach out to as there are regular catch up sessions with learning and development and the other interns, where you have the opportunity to learn about what everyone else is getting involved with too.
What are you doing now post your internship?
I am now a Treasury Operational Control Analyst at Close Brothers, I work on things I started as an intern and am involved in the process from start to end, from organising how governance activities are conducted in Treasury to creating final papers that are reported to senior managers at risk committees. I am still involved with the Treasury engagement committee and have also joined the accessibility network committee and become a security champion.
